Mixed Xylenes

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on Mixed Xylenes contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five and ten year projections. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 142 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce Mixed Xylenes.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of mixed xylenes in 2010 were each approximately 44 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization was around 74% in 2010. Xylenes consumption in 2010 is estimated to have increased by around 10.6% from 2009; it is expected to average growth of 4.4% per year from 2010 to 2015, and 3.2% per year from 2015 to 2020. Operating rates are expected to drop during 2011-2014 but gradually increase thereafter.

The three isomers of xylene—ortho-xylene, meta-xylene, and para-xylene—and ethylbenzene, are known collectively as mixed xylenes. para-xylene (p-xylene), the most valuable of the three isomers, accounted for around 84% of global mixed xylenes consumption in 2010, followed by ortho-xylene (o-xylene) with 9% of total consumption. Other xylenes applications include meta-xylene, solvent use, and gasoline blending.

The following pie chart shows world consumption of xylenes by end use:
