Toluene

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on Toluene contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five and ten year projections. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 200 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce Toluene as well as capacities for derivative products.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of toluene in 2010 were each almost 20 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization was 66% in 2010. Toluene consumption is estimated to have increased by almost 1.4% in 2010. Demand is expected to grow on average 3.1% per year from 2010 to 2015, and 1.5% per year from 2015 to 2020. Average global utilization rates are expected to remain in the mid-60s to low-70s range throughout the forecast period.

Toluene is a leading petrochemical building block, and is also valued as a solvent and an octane improver in gasoline. Production of benzene and p-xylene accounted for around 29% and 26%, respectively, of global toluene consumption in 2010. Other (chemical) applications for toluene include production of TDI, caprolactam, and benzoic acid.
