Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI)

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on TDI contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five and ten year projections. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 110 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce TDI.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of TDI in 2010 were approximately 1.8 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization was an estimated 85% in 2010, an incredible increase from 74% in 2009 due to a much larger increase in consumption along with a slight increase in capacity. Global TDI consumption in 2010 is estimated to have increased by 16% from 2009; it is forecast to average almost 5% per year growth from 2010 to 2015, slowing to 3.5% per year growth from 2015 to 2020. Operating rates are expected to gradually increase to the mid- to high-80s range by 2020.

TDI is used mainly to make flexible polyurethane foams, accounting for almost 70% of total consumption in 2010. Smaller amounts are used in rigid foams for insulation, surface coatings, urethane elastomers, and adhesives and sealants.

The following pie chart shows world consumption of TDI by end use:
