Styrene

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on Styrene contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five and ten year projections. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 200 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce Styrene as well as capacities for derivative products.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of styrene in 2010 were each approximately 25 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization was 81% in 2010. Styrene consumption in 2010 is estimated to have increased by 5% from 2009; it is forecast to grow an average of 3.6% per year from 2010 to 2015, and 2.7% per year from 2015 to 2020. Average global utilization rates are expected to reach the low 90s range by the end of the forecast period.

The largest end use of styrene is for production of polystyrene, which accounted for almost 60% of global styrene consumption in 2010; the second major use is ABS/SAN resins. Other applications for styrene include the manufacture of SBR solid and latex, SB copolymer latex, unsaturated polyester resins, and styrenic copolymers.

The following pie chart shows world consumption of styrene by end use:
