Abstract
Global production and consumption of polyester fibers in 2010 were each almost 34 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization was 85% in 2010, an increase from 81% in 2009. Polyester fibers consumption is estimated to have increased in 2010 by 8.8% from 2009; it is expected to grow an average of 4.1% per year from 2010 to 2015, slowing to 3.2% per year from 2015 to 2020. Average global utilization rates are expected to remain in the low-80s to high-80s range throughout the forecast period.
Textile filament yarn accounted for around 57% of global polyester fibers consumption in 2010, followed by staple fiber. China is the world's major producer of polyester fibers, and major consumer as well, exporting large amounts of finished goods to countries all over the world.
