Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Melt Phase

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on PET, Melt Phase contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five and ten year projections. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 240 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce PET, Melt Phase as well as capacities for derivative products.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of PET melt in 2010 were both approximately 54 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization was 76% in 2010. Global PET melt consumption is estimated to have increased by 7.6% in 2010; it is expected to grow an average of 4.5% per year from 2010 to 2015, with slower growth of around 3.5% per year from 2015 to 2020. Average global utilization rates are expected to increase gradually, reaching the mid-80s range by the end of the forecast period.

The main end uses of PET are for production of polyester fibers, accounting for around 66% of global consumption, and PET bottle resins, which consume around 29%. Other applications include polyester film and polyester engineering resins.

The following pie chart shows world consumption of PET melt by end use:
