Oxo Alcohols

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on (C3) Oxo Alcohols contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five and ten year projections; production, consumption and trade are estimated for 2-Ethylhexyl Alcohol, Isobutyl Alcohol and n-Butyl Alcohol separately in the analysis. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 184 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce Oxo Alcohols, as well as capacities for derivative products.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of (C3) oxo alcohols in 2010 were approximately 6.3 million metric tons. Average global capacity utilization was 69% in 2010, an increase from 64% in 2009. Global oxo alcohols consumption is estimated to have increased by 7.9% in 2010 from 2009. Global demand for oxo alcohols is forecast to grow an average of 5.5% per year from 2010 to 2015 and just under 3% per year from 2015 to 2020. Average global utilization rates are expected to range from the high 60s range to the mid-70s range during the next few years.

The oxo alcohols analysis breaks out 2-ethylhexyl (2-EH) alcohol, isobutyl alcohol, and n-butyl alcohol. n-Butyl alcohol and 2-EH alcohol are the largest markets, accounting for 47% to 45% of total oxos consumption, respectively. Globally in 2010, chemical applications accounted for 82% of n-butyl alcohol consumption, plasticizer use accounted for 79% of 2-EH consumption, and solvents made up 53% of isobutyl alcohol use.

The following pie charts show world consumption of oxo alcohols by end use:
