Ethylene

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on Ethylene contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five and ten year projections. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 280 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce Ethylene, as well as capacities for derivative products.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of ethylene in 2010 were both approximately 123 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization was 86.9% in 2010, down from 87.1% in 2009. Ethylene consumption is estimated to have increased by 8.2% in 2010; it is forecast to grow an average 3.4% per year from 2010 to 2015, rising to 3.5% per year from 2015 to 2020. Average global utilization rates are expected to range from the high-80s range to the mid-90s range throughout the forecast period.

The largest application for ethylene is in the production of polyethylene—HDPE, LDPE, and LLDPE—which together account for almost 60% of total global ethylene consumption. Other major end uses include manufacture of ethylene oxide, ethylene dichloride/vinyl chloride, ethylbenzene, and alpha olefins.

The following pie chart shows world consumption of ethylene by end use.
