Ethylene Oxide

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on Ethylene Oxide contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five and ten year projections. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 145 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce Ethylene Oxide, as well as capacities for derivative products.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of ethylene oxide in 2010 were both around 21 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization was 87% in 2010, less than that in 2009. Ethylene oxide consumption in 2010 is estimated to have increased from 2009 by 8.7%; it is forecast to average growth of 3.4% per year from 2010 to 2015, and around 3.1% per year from 2015 to 2020. Average global utilization rates are expected to range from the low 80s to the low 90s range throughout the forecast period.

The major application for ethylene oxide is in the manufacture of (mono) ethylene glycol, which accounted for more than 70% of total EO consumption in 2010. Production of ethoxylates consumes another 9.7%, and smaller amounts are used to make higher glycols, ethanolamines, glycol ether, and polyols.

The following pie chart shows world consumption of ethylene oxide by end use.
