Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT)

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on DMT contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five and ten year projections. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 85 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce DMT, as well as capacities for derivative products.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of DMT in 2010 were each almost 2.0 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization was 89.2% in 2010. DMT consumption is estimated to have increased by 5% in 2010 from 2009; it is expected to decrease slightly at an average rate of -1.0% per year from 2010 to 2015, with little to no growth thereafter. Average global utilization rates will remain in the low- to mid-80s range during the forecast period.

Commercial production of DMT is based on p-xylene feedstock. The major use of DMT is in the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate resins (PET), although DMT has lost and will continue to lose significant market share to terephthalic acid (TPA) in PET melt manufacturing. DMT is also used as a feedstock for CHDM and polybutylene terephthalate.
