Butadiene

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on butadiene contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five- and ten-year projections. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 162 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce butadiene, as well as capacities for derivative products.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of butadiene in 2010 were both approximately 10.5 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization averaged 81% in 2010. Butadiene consumption is estimated to have increased by 6.8% in 2010; it is expected to average growth of 4.0% per year from 2010 to 2015, slowing to 2.7% per year from 2015 to 2020. Global utilization rates are expected to be in the 80s.

Styrene butadiene rubber (solid & latex) accounted for more than 33% of global butadiene consumption in 2010, and polybutadiene rubber, for around 25%. Other applications for butadiene include manufacture of styrenic copolymers, ABS resins, SB latex, nitrile rubber, and adiponitrile/HMDA.

The following pie chart shows world consumption of butadiene by end use:
