Acetone

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on acetone contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years, and five- and ten-year projections. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 146 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce acetone, as well as capacities for derivative products.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of acetone in 2010 was approximately 5.5 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization averaged 81.6% in 2010; this was a significant increase from 2009 due to a larger increase in global production than capacity in 2010. Total global acetone consumption in 2010 is estimated to have increased by 5% from 2009; it is expected to increase on average by 4.0% per year from 2010 to 2015, slowing to 2.4% per year from 2015 to 2020. Global utilization rates are expected to average in the low- to mid-80s range throughout the forecast period.

The largest volume applications of acetone are solvent uses, methyl methacrylate production and bisphenol-A production. These three categories consumed about 80% of global acetone consumption in 2010. Other applications for acetone include acetone cyanohydrin and isopropyl alcohol.
