Acetic Acid

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on acetic acid contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five- and ten-year projections. The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 170 pages. There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce acetic acid, as well as capacities for derivative products.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of acetic acid in 2010 was approximately 10.7 million metric tons. Global capacity utilization was 85% in 2010; this was a slight increase from 2009 due to a larger increase in production than capacity. Global acetic acid consumption is estimated to have increased in 2010, and global consumption is expected to increase by 4.5% per year from 2010 to 2015, slowing to 2.9% per year from 2015 to 2020. Utilization rates are expected to decrease during 2011-2013 and then will begin a slow but gradual increase to the end of the forecast period.

Vinyl acetate accounted for about 31% of global acetic acid consumption in 2010, followed by terephthalic acid (TPA) and acetate esters.

The following pie chart shows world consumption of acetic acid by end use:
